Slip, Cut & Create: A Ceramic Slip Decoration Workshop

Join us for a vibrant two-day pottery workshop exploring the colourful world of slip decoration, paper transfers and oxides. Discover how to create bold patterns, playful shapes and one-off designs to transform your handmade ceramic pieces into colourful works of art. Day One: Make & Prepare We’ll begin with a three-hour making session, where you’ll create and refine four slab-built ceramic pieces, ready to decorate the following day. Allow your creativity to lead the way - You could make plates, mugs, small dishes, bowls, vases or experiment with your own imaginative forms. We’ll help you prepare your pieces so they’re ready for the exciting decorating stage. Day Two: Cut, Print & Create Now for the fun colourful part! Using newsprint, scissors and a selection of vibrant coloured slips, you’ll explore the possibilities of paper-transfer techniques to create your own unique ceramic designs. Cut out shapes, paint patterns and layer colours to build up striking designs before transferring them onto the leather-hard surfaces of your pieces. Once your designs are in place, you can smooth the surfaces for a clean finish or add further marks and details to give your work even more character. No two pieces need to be the same, so have fun experimenting with colour, pattern and composition! (3-4 hours to include clean-up time - it’s a messy workshop!) The Finishing Touches Once you’ve completed your designs, the Mudworks team will take care of the finishing process. Your pieces will be bisque-fired, treated with oxides to enhance their detail (this step is optional), sanded and glazed. Your finished ceramic creations will be ready to collect approximately three weeks after the workshop. Come along, get creative and discover just how much colour and character you can bring to clay!
